Case study

“Memory enhancing memorabilia”

How might we make a souvenir that highlights an annual event and functions as a daily aid to productivity?

Insights

Every year a group of friends head west for a week in the mountains to act like the children, playing with our snowboards amongst back-flips and beers...

Some of us in the group take it upon ourselves to contribute a special item in remeberence the time we spend together.

Inspiration

As a collective bunch of designers, engineers, artists, craftsmen, and chemists. We wanted to find a product that would be multifaceted enough to provide a unique experience for each of the different users.

Inspirational research:

A new study by Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer of Princeton University and UCLA Los Angeles respectively, shows that students who write out their notes by hand learn more than those who type their notes on laptops. - pbs.org“When we write by hand, we have to coordinate verbal and fine movement systems” Dr. Helen Macpherson of the Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN) at Deakin University. - Huffington Post“

Draw everywhere and all the time. An artist is a sketchbook with a person attached,” -artist Irwin Greenberg _Huffington post.

Design

More of a “design with your hands” process. The two major parameters: must be a sketchbook and, must also be a wallet - lent nicely to` a freehand prototyping experiment.

Prototype

Quick and easy - proof of concept.

Fabrication

Out of  2” solid bar we used a 3-axis CNC mill to produce the brand and 1” solid bar was used on the CNC lathe to produce the handle

We used Fusion360 to model all the parts and to set up the cam opperations for both the mill and lathe.
.

Final Product

One member has been doing much in the way of hand sewn small leather goods - we combined forces to provide each attendee with  functional piece memorabilia.

Conclusion

Things learned

Increase handle length for thermal dissipation.

Use a laser thermometer to keep brand head temp consistant.

Branding contact time should be quick, less time on the leather equates to less deformity of hide.

Next Steps

Start planning for next year and look forward to seeing some well worn ones in the future.

Making more things with your friends, its fun!
