Case Study

How might we increase happiness by connecting people to a more natural world?

Plant-based furniture systems

Insight

Integrating plants into everyday home furnishings has a positive psychological and physiological effect on people and society.

Plants provide - they are used to build our homes, make our furniture, feed our kids, they even make us smile when we look at them.

Inspiration

Plants make people happy. Humans relationship with our surrounding environment is clearly stressed. Appreciating the natural world can help to drive systemic change and our resource usage.
More plants, fewer a**holes. 😬✌️

Ideation

Inspired by the conscious consumer movement and prevailing business ethos of responsible and ethical production.

We design plant systems to catalyze positive effects of flora and our built environment.

The value we have for our natural systems intrinsically is the value we place on human health.

- Daybed, coffee table, chair, bench, day bench, credenza, dresser, coat rack and plant stands, etc.

Prototype

Digital Modeling helped to understand material choice, connection details, shape, and proportion.

The physical prototype informed simplified approaches to fabrication and assembly.

- modeled in Fusion360 and fabricated from leftover steel and brass.

Conclusion

Things we are learning:

Securing scrap metals with a consistent finish and shape proves difficult.

-CNC should be used for precision bends to retain squareness.

-Investigate water circulation and lighting opportunities.

-Composting systems and kitchen appliances.

Next Steps

Digital and physical prototyping for all initial pieces.

Define branding and website.

Campaign photo shoot.
